X-Dragon Solar Panel Review
Days Out And Weekends Away
Days out and weekends away with the family or just the two of you are great. There is nothing better than finishing work on a Friday and looking forward to a day or two out and about. Even better if you are camping for a couple of days. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life to enjoy the beach, forest or lake. X-Dragon have provided you with a way to charge your electronics when you are enjoying out and about time.
Camping and caravanning for the weekend will need power too. Especially if, you are in a remote location with little or no available power. The X-Dragon 70w can also be used at home in emergencies, for instance during a power outage. You will be able to charge your phone or laptop. The sun is nearly always about, you will be the envy of the neighbors !!!
What Is The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel
The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel is a USB solar charger. This means the solar panel does not store electricity. The X-Dragon 70w will charge electronic devices’ like mobile phones tablets and laptops. It will not power appliances unless you hook it up to a power bank or solar power station.
2 x USB 5V/2.4A – The X-Dragon 70w, is equipped with 2 USB ports, so you can charge two devices’ at once. Attaching a power bank via USB will allow you to store electricity for later use.
1 x DC 18V/3A – The solar panel generates direct current (DC) electricity. This means it will charge laptops, 12v car batteries and solar power stations. Very useful if you want to charge a laptop or power camping appliances like lights or a cooler. Great at home if there is a power outage to charge electronics.
You would attach a small solar power station to this port to create AC electricity. This would allow you to power small domestic appliances.
The X-Dragon 70w is different to other types of portable solar panels, because it is foldable, softer and lighter. Consisting of 9 individual solar panels positioned in 3 x 3 rows, made from SunPower solar cells.
In case, you didn’t know SunPower solar cells are a thin layer of chemically treated single – crystal silicon cells. These types of cells have an efficiency of up to 25.2%. The solar industry cell average standard is between 17 and 19% according to solar.com. The X-dragon 70w solar panel charger has an efficiency of up to 23.5%. All this means, it can charge your devices’ faster.
Durable and hardwearing
The 70w solar panels are coated with industrial strength PET polymer (source: Wikipedia). In case, you didn’t know, that is Polyethylene terephthalate. I am not an expert in polymers by the way. This makes the panels very durable and corrosion, high temperature and weather-resistant. The odd mishap will do little damage.
Multiple X-Dragon 70w Solar Panels can be chained together in parallel to form a solar array. The maximum number of solar panels you can chain together is 4. This is because the total number of allowed watts has a limit of 280.
The X-Dragon 70w solar panel charger is the size of a briefcase, very easy to carry around and transport. It will easily fit into any car so finding space for it isn’t a problem.
Compared to other types of solar panels such as the Jackery 60w SolarSaga.
|X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger||Jackery SolarSaga Solar Panel|
|Type||Soft Foldable||Rigid Foldable|
|Wattage||70 Watts||60 Watts|
|Dimensions Folded||13.18 x 7.08 x 1.96inch||16.7 x 21.1 x 1.38 inches|
There is a definite portability and power advantage, you will be able to take it anywhere.
- Tent camping
- Camper Van
- Traveling abroad
And by adding a solar controller you can charge a small camper van’s leisure battery or 12V car battery.
Attaching the X-Dragon 70w solar charger to your tent couldn’t be easier. There are eye holes with carabiners supplied to hook up the solar panel. Just secure to the tent side facing the sun and away you go.
Using the X-Dragon solar panel safely
- LED: Indicates if the solar panel is charging or not
- Short circuit protection
- Power surge protection
- FCC, RoHS and CE Certified
X-Dragon say; The chip inside the charger will recognize your device. This then provides optimal charging speed for different devices’. Making charging with the solar panel faster and safer. Were possile use the cable supplied by the devices’ manufacturer to charge it with the X-Dragon.
The X-Dragon 70w will be at its best collecting sunlight when it is directly exposed to its rays. It will work ok in partly cloudy conditions but at a reduced charging rate. I would not charge in heavy cloud or low light conditions.
Never leave your electronic device or laptop charging in direct sunlight. IT MAY OVER HEAT. Instead, cover it with something light to keep it cool. You don’t want your super expensive device to fry do you?
Potential for device battery discharge
There may be potential for your device to suffer battery drain in varying weather conditions. I would not recommend charging your devices’ directly with the X-Dragon 70w if it is cloudy. To be 100% safe I would add a power bank.
A power bank is a storage battery. You can used to store power for later used to charge devices’. Better to charge your power bank during the day and charge your devices’ at night. While the X-Dragon is charging the power bank there is no chance of battery drain. Because it will automatically stop charging if, the 70w panel isn’t sending any charge.
Charging devices’ directly from the X-Dragon solar charger is fine as long as it is in full sunlight.
What’s in the box?
- X-Dragon 70w foldable solar panel charger
- 5 laptop connectors
- DC cables 5525 -5521-5525 to car clamp cable.
It is not recommended that you directly charge your 12V battery. Instead, charge through a charge controller or a solar power station.
Using a Power Bank With The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger
As I mentioned earlier, it is best to use a power bank with the X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger. This is because. you will avoid the risk of your device discharging. When still connected to the solar panel in low light or very cloudy conditions.
In case, you don’t know what the term discharging means.
When your device is still connected to the solar panel charger in low light or very cloudy conditions. It will stop delivering charge to your devices’ battery. This leaves your devices’ battery the potential to drain its charge back into the solar panel. Result, a flat device battery.
There is no chance of this happening if you charge a power bank with the X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger. This is because, if the power bank is not receiving any charge, it will automatically stop charging. Non of its collected charge will drain back into the solar panel charger.
Of course the other thing is, you can safely charge your devices’ at later time when it is more convenient. The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger is compatible with most manufacturers power banks.

The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger has a higher peak power and more ports. It’s extra panel makes it generally more powerful than the 40w version. But the 40w version is smaller and lighter which may make it more attractive to hikers and cyclists.
What’s Good About The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger
It can charge multiple electronic devices
Other manufacturers portable solar panel chargers can let you down when it comes to which devices’ it can charge. Not so with the X-Dragon 70w. This portable solar charger will definitely charge a laptop through the DC output port. It comes with a choice of several adapters to fit your laptops charging port.
Tablets and larger smartphones are not a problem. This is because, unlike smaller 21w chargers the X-Dragon 70w has the power to deliver enough charge.
It can charge small portable solar power stations
The X-Dragon 70w’s ability to charge small solar power stations makes it extremely versatile. Being able to hook up to a power station and charge it while camping is very useful. Those weekend trips camping in your tent or camper van were there isn’t a power supply become more accessible.
The X-Dragons performance compared to smaller wattage solar chargers is far superior. Because it delivers a higher rated charging power and has a larger surface area. It will charge your devices’ faster. With an efficiency of up to 23.5% coupled with the 70w rating. This makes the X-Dragon a fast and reliable solar charging method.
What’s Not So good About The X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger
Risk of battery discharge
Like all solar panel chargers there is a risk of your devices’ charge leaking back into the charger. This usually occurs in low light or heavy cloudy conditions. This is because, it can stop charging altogether. As I mentioned earlier the safest method to stop this happening is by adding a power bank.
There is a LED light fitted to visually let you know whether the X-Dragon is charging your device or not. This is useful under cloudy conditions. Because it will give you a warning to disconnect your device if necessary, if the LED isn’t lit-up.
Remember the X-Dragon will still charge under mildly cloudy conditions, but at a reduced rate. So, my best advice is to only charge electronic devices’ directly with the X-Dragon when there is full sunshine.
Not totally waterproof
Even though the x-Dragon is a sealed unit which is waterproof, the junction box isn’t. If moisture leeks into the box it can potentially short the solar panel charger. My advice is to never leave it out at night and if it starts raining fold it up to protect the junction box or stow it away.
Big for attaching to a backpack
The X-Dragon 90w and 40w are both a bit big to attach to a backpack. But if you are hiking in a group it is easily transported between you because it has a carry handle. In a group setting the extra 1.38kg/3 lbs shouldn’t be too much of a problem if shared between you all.
If you are looking for a solar panel charger that will attach to your backpack. I recommend the Anker Solar Panel 21w PowerPort USB Charger
Is the X-Dragon 70w Portable Solar Charger Worth Buying?
For sure the X-Dragon 70w Solar Panel Charger has a few little niggles. It’s probably a bit too big and heavy for backpacking and hiking. But hey, these things aren’t a deal breaker. Because overall, it is a powerful, versatile solar power charging provider, that is easily transported.
Because of its weight and size the X-Dragons’ best uses are for:
- Tent camping
- A camper van
- A caravan
- An RV
- A boat
- A truck
- Days out
- Weekends away
- Short vacations
- Traveling abroad
- Hiking with a group
- A power outage at home
- Charging vehicle batteries (solar charge controller required)
The X-Dragon 70w is worth buying because of all the different uses you can put it too. This solar panel charger can most certainly provide you with electricity in any off-grid setting. And provide some limited power in an electrical emergency. But you know what they say; during a power outage it is better to have some than non at all.
