Jackery are an industry leader in the eco-friendly portable power market. Their green energy products are aimed at helping people produce clean electricity in an off-grid setting. Founded by a former Apple battery engineer Jackery have been going strong since 2012. 

Manufacturing the worlds first lithium portable power station back in 2015, they went on to design a range of 7 models. From the budget Explorer 160wh portable power station to the powerful 2000wh station.

Their reputation for quality workmanship, reliability and durability is second to non. The

What is The Jackery 1000 Explorer Portable Power Station?

The traditional way to produce electricity on the go, is with a portable gasoline generator. Unfortunately they are heavy and difficult to transport. Need maintenance and are loud, dirty and smelly. They can also be dangerous, because the fuel to drive them is flammable.

But, there is a cleaner, greener and less noisy way to generate power, HURRAH!!!, and its through sunlight. Many people don’t realize that solar power technology has moved on over the last 10 years. Now you can power your campsite with a portable power station and a solar panel or two.

This combination is called a portable solar generator. It is completely silent and won’t blow your tent up or poison you with carbon monoxide. The Jackery 1000 is a battery which stores the power gathered by the solar panels. And converts it into usable electricity for either DC or AC rated appliances.

Battery

The battery has a  Li-ion chemistry, rated at 500 cycles, with a 1002wh capacity and can be charged in 3 ways. 

  • 2 x 100w solar panels: Charge time 8 hours.
  • AC adaptor: Charge time 7 hours. This is useful when you want to arrive at your destination with the unit pre-charged.
  • 12v car adaptor: Charge time 14 hours.

The Jackery explorer 1000 portable power station solar panel can also charge smartphones and tablets. Through the built in USB-C and USB-A output ports.

They are monocrystalline solar panels with a 23% efficiency. The industry standard being 17% to 19% according to solar.com. The portability of the portable solar panels is great. Because, they are light and foldable, with built-in carry handles.

They will fit quite nicely into the average sized car, no need to worry about everybody squeezing in. All you have to do when you arrive at your destination is point them at the sun. Then hook them up to the Jackery 1000 portable solar power station.

What’s Good About The Jackery Explorer 1000

  • Easy to use: 
    The very best thing about the Jackery Explorer 1000 power station is its portability. And it’s reasonably lightweight for such a large capacity portable solar station. When you add the solar panels into the mix, the whole package is easy to move around.

    Ease of setup is a big factor too, just unload it set it down and you’re generating power. It really does feel like a plug and play system even a complete technophobe could get to grips with and set up..

  • Quality Product: 
    Portable solar power station looks very solid and well-built, as do the solar panels. The kind of durability and quality you would expect from a manufacturer like Jackery

  • Value for money: 
    The Jackery Explorer 1000 power station is good value for money because, not only does it have many benefits. You would be hard pushed to put together a top quality comparable system. From individual parts, for that much less.

What’s Not So Good About The Jackery Explorer 1000

  • The 200w Solar panel isn’t compatible: 
    In an ideal world, if you have space constraints being able to use 1 solar panel instead of 2 would be a solution. But, Jackery say that the 200w version isn’t compatible with the Explorer1000 station.

    It is possible to couple higher rated single panels with the 1000 solar station, but they must be under 200w. I wouldn’t recommend it though. Because a single lower watt rated solar panel would mean longer charging times.

  • The battery is rated at 500 cycles: 
    If, you don’t know what this means, it is the number of times the unit can be re-charged before the end of its life. It will carry on charging after that, but at a decreasing rate until eventually, it will not charge at all.

    This may lead to a limited lifespan probably 3 years maximum, if you are living on the road. However, that isn’t so much of a problem if you are just using it for short trips, days out, weekends away, and vacations. The Jackery solar power station will last much longer.

Solar Power Has Some Limitations

Solar power is fantastic, because it provides an environmentally friendly energy source. Lets be honest. Without solar panels the world would be relying on smelly, noisy gasoline generators. You just need to be aware of a few things.

  1. When it is overcast, the PV cells will receive less light. Reducing the rate of charge, meaning it will take longer to charge the Jackery Explorer 1000. This isn’t a major problem, if you reduce the amount of devices you are using during these periods.

  2. Shade will stop charging altogether. Keep an eye out for this now and again and move the panels into the sunlight if necessary. This is important if you are near an overhang or obstruction such as in and around a forest. You will need to check for shade more often.

It’s Official the Jackery 1000 Solar Power Station Is A Winner

All in all the Jackery Explorer 1000 solar power station is great. If, you are looking for a larger unit to power more appliances, than the smaller units. Larger 1500w and the 2000w stations and generators cost much more. The Jackery Explorer 1000 might fit snugly into your budget. The solar power station is very versatile and easy to use and a believe great value for money.

Jackery are a major name in the green power market. All their products are of fine quality and workmanship. And I’ve heard their customer service is pretty good too.

  1. This is a helpful review that covers all the main questions I have about this Jackery portable power station. We tend to get a lot of storms where I live, so this is less for travel and camping purposes and more something that will help out when power is cut unexpectedly. 

    It’s good to know about its 500 cycle lifespan. This sounds like a lot but with frequent use, it might not last as long as one would hope. How does the lifecycle comparable with other similar power stations?

    1. Hi Aly, I am so glad that my review answered your main questions. 
      As to the cycles question, Goal Zero’s Yeti is the same.
      The Bluetti EB150 has a 2,500 + cycle but it is twice as heavy, which I guess is ok because you are not going to be moving it around much. It is also more expensive $1,299.99. 
      At the moment there is a $300,00 off offer, bringing it down to about the same as the Explorer 1000.

Nowadays with climate change is is essential to have an alternate source of power in case of an emergency or for outdoor activities. Going green is the way forward, one is able to charge their electronics while away from home

    1. Hi Diana Thank you. I believe in the coming years solar power will become the main way we generate electricity. But I think this won’t happen until the whole world realises we are helping to destroy our planet with Co2. 

  3. Hi and thanks for this review. Noting that this has a lithium-ion battery, I was wondering whether there are ways to extend the battery life by discharging the battery completely before charging it? Conversely, is it also possible to seriously damage the longevity of the battery if you are not careful how you charge it and run it down? This was always an issue with the early lithium-ion batteries and I have had a number of devices die on me prematurely because I wasn’t careful to run it all the way down to empty on the first few uses.     1. Hi Andy great questions. I must confess I am not an expert on battery chemistry. So in answer to your questions I will point you in the direction of the Battery University. They have an article called Charging Lithium-Ion. This is a snippet of what they say 

      Turn off the device or disconnect the load on charge to allow the current to drop unhindered during saturation.
      A parasitic load confuses the charger.Charge at a moderate temperature.
      Do not charge at freezing temperature. (See BU-410: Charging at High and Low Temperatures)
      Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.
      Not all chargers apply a full topping charge and the battery may not be fully charged when the “ready” signal appears; a 100 percent charge on a fuel gauge may be a lie.
      Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.
      Apply some charge to an empty battery before storing (40–50 percent SoC is ideal). (See BU-702: How to Store Batteries.)

  4. In the future, we will all be off the grid and get our energy from renewable sources. The Jackery would be great to use camping and around the house to cut energy bills. This portable power station would be excellent in Costa Rico, which lost its power for a long time due to a hurricane. Do you have any solar-powered stations that are a little more affordable?

    1. Hi Sharon, Yes I do have a suggestion for you. It really does come down to your budget. Solar power stations are priced on there watt hour and inverter wattage. So you need to be aware that the explorer 1000 provides 1000 watt hours and will power domestic appliances up to 1000w.

      The Acopower 220wh with 70w portable solar panel will power appliances with up to a 250w rating. It will charge laptops, smartphones and tablets. And will run a 20w light for 10hrs and a 30-60w mini fridge for 6 hours. 

      While it is no were near as powerful as the Jackery Explorer 1000. The Acopower 220wh would be useful during a power outage. I have taken the liberty of providing a link   https://www.acopower.com/colle… the cost is $338.80
