How big is a 200 watt solar panel? With all the different makes and models on the market it’s difficult to gauge. You’re not looking for an exact measurement at this stage, just a ballpark estimate.

In this post I have tried to make that easy for you so you can at least envision how big it is. I have achieved this by using the average sizes of four well known 200 watt models. 

I will be looking at the dimensions of 200w rigid panels and 200w solar suitcases. Comparing them with 100 watt panels and how the two sizes might affect an installation. Finally comparing solar suitcases with regard to size, weight and transportation.

So let’s find out how big the average dimensions are;

How Big Is A 200 Watt Solar Panel?

“The average 200 wall solar panel dimensions are;
61.73 x 26.64 x1.39inch (5.1ft x 2.2ft x 1.39inch).
If you would prefer them in metric they are; 1567.9 x 676.7 x 35.3.
The average weight is 26.76lbs or 12.14Kg.
For a 200 watt solar suitcase the average is;
53.75 x 37.8 x 1.8inch (4.5ft x 3.1ft x 1,8inch).
Or again if you prefer how big the solar suitcase is in metric it is 1365.3 x 960.1 x 45.72.
The weight of the suitcase sample I used varies between 35.9lbs and 52lbs. 

The Sample 200 Watt Solar Panels Sizes I Used To Determine How Big They Are

To determine the average dimensions of the solar panels sizes and suitcases I sampled four of each type.

Because of the widely differing weight of the solar suitcases I have used as a sample. I have chosen not to give an average as it would be skewed. 

How Big Are 200 Watt Solar Panels Compared To 100 Watt?

To give you a feeling for the size differences between different solar panels. I am going to use the Renogy, ACOPOWER, Newpowa and Rich Solar ranges.

Yes I know that there are loads of different one and two hundred watt panels on the market. But I believe the four I have used are a typical representation. So the average dimensions for them will be pretty close for an overall impression. 

You would most certainly be using the actual manufacturer quoted sizes to measure up with. Looking at the sizes you might have thought the 200w might be twice the size of the 100w. Turns out this isn’t the case with them being about 30% larger.

How Might The Sizes Of 100w And 200w Solar Panels Affect An Installation?

I know 100-watt solar panels are very popular mainly because of the price. But if you are looking to save roof space a 200 watt is the obvious choice. Why do I say that? If you look at how big 2 x 100 watt solar panels are 89.04 x 40.14inch that is 27.31 x 13.47 larger.

Then there is the spacing to take into consideration. Clearly 200 watt panels are more economical to install. Not only saving space but also cabling, brackets and mountings.

Installing panels to an RV, camper or trailer might even mean having to drill less holes in your roof. This can only be a good thing reducing the chances of water ingress into your pride and joy.

Difference In Performance

You might be thinking. Will there be a difference in performance between using 2 x 100w and a single 200w. Well let’s have a look at the specifications of 2 x 100 watt and a 200w panel. To keep things simple we will assume a 12V system with the 100w panels connected in parallel.

For this I will use ACOPOWER panels. Not because I favour them but because their specifications are clear.

Straight away you can see by dividing the watts 200 by the VMP 17.48 of the 2 x 100w panels. The result is a higher amp output 11.42A v’s a single 200 watt solar panel with 9.8A. So it’s a trade off a potential higher amp output or a space and cable saving. 

In case you didn’t know VMP stands for voltage at the maximum power point.

Pv Education say;

To gain the maximum amount of power from the solar cell it should operate at the maximum power voltage. The maximum power voltage is further described by VMP, the maximum power voltage and IMP, the current at the maximum power point. (Source; pveducation.org)

The 2 x 100w  and the 200w panels would both require a 20A solar charge controller and fuse. There isn’t a considerable weight difference, just over a pound. But if you consider a larger installation say 400 watt the space saving would be even greater.

How Big Are The Differences Between A 100 Watt and 200 Watt Solar Suitcase?

Having taken a look at the differences between installed solar panels. Finally it’s time to compare 100w and 200w solar suitcases. For this comparison I will use the Renogy suitcase range.

Obviously the 200 watt suitcase is much bigger and heavier than 100 watt. This does impact the 200 watts portability both from a transportation and storage point of view. But as always a 100 watt solar panel will only give a 100 watt performance.

This means that if you are using the solar suitcase to keep your vehicle house batteries charged. The 200 watt is a much better option even against 2 x 100 watt suitcases. And you shouldn’t have too many difficulties finding a place to keep it safe for transportation.

It could be difficult to transport the 200w in a smaller vehicle for use charging a solar power station. So I would say if you are thinking about a 200 watt suitcase you will need a larger vehicle. If you have a smaller vehicle I would think twice and explore alternative options. 

Such as a 100 watt suitcase to charge an appropriately sized solar power station. I would also think along the same lines for use charging smaller boat or recreational vehicle batteries. 

My Closing Thoughts

Hopefully you can now see in your mind’s eye how big the rigid panel and solar  suitcases are. With regard to the rigid 200 watt solar panel installation. It might have helped you visualise a schematic for distribution of the panels in the available space. 

The size and performance comparisons I have used with 100 watt solar panels are useful. In the fact that you can make an informed decision with regard to space limitations. And how the different sizes might impact other installation elements such as cabling and drilling.

When it comes to solar suitcases the dimensions are really important when it comes to transportation. I mean you don’t want to have it delivered and it wont fit in your vehicle that would be a disaster.
