AGM Deep Cycle Battery For Solar

As far as I know, there isn’t an AGM deep cycle battery specifically designed for solar panels.  An AGM battery can be used with any solar panel, from a solar suitcase to a full-blown solar array. 

Your battery or battery bank will determine the size of the solar panel or solar array you would use to charge it. 

For instance, if you had a camper equipped with 2 x 100ah batteries, you could recharge them with a 200w portable solar panel. Or, if you installed solar panels on your boat, you could use 400w of solar.

In both cases, It is an absolute must you use a solar charge controller to avoid overcharging the batteries.

The charge controller will also let you know about the current charge, the amps, and the voltage the panels produce. It will also provide information about your battery’s voltage at its current depth of discharge. This is important to be able to gauge its health, especially if it isn’t charging correctly. 

Renogy 100Ah AGM 12V Deep Cycle Battery

The Renogy100Ah, like all deep cycle AGM batteries is spill-proof and maintenance-free. Designed to work best with solar, wind, and off-grid applications. It can be used in different settings, from RV to a boat to a DIY project. Setting the battery up isn’t too difficult as demonstrated in the video below.


The outer casing is made from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). This makes the battery tough, very durable, and hard-wearing. 

Internally the battery incorporates quinary alloy and grid plates, providing a lower resistance. Enabling higher, more efficient discharge rates. Advanced valve technology and the latest electrolyte formula complete the great features the battery employs.

Battery life

To prolong the battery’s life, it is recommended not to discharge it below 50% DOD. Which equates to 50Ah or around 12.3V, which should provide a life span of 600 cycles. If you want to extend the life span, I recommend only discharging to 30% of DOD.

Multiple batteries can be connected in series or parallel. But to help prolong the life span, I would suggest using a battery balancer.

It can crank smaller engines because it has a maximum discharge current of 1100A for 5 seconds. But really, only when the battery is new because the discharge is less effective as it gets older. I would stick to using it as a deep cycle battery only.

With a self-discharge rate of ≤3% per month that’s around 3A at 77°F, the battery has a long shelf life. I would check it with an amp or multimeter every 3 to 6 months if shelved and top off if necessary.

Renogy has shipped thousands of units, and the quality of their 100Ah battery is backed by the warranty. I would register the warranty the day the battery is delivered, which can be done on Renogys’ website. 

Just scroll down to the bottom of any page, and you will find a section called support. There is a link called Warranty Registration. Hit that and fill in your details. Doing this will ensure if you have any problems, your customer service needs will be met promptly. 

The product should arrive at your door fully charged so you can test it straight away.

Customer Reviews

There is no doubt in my mind that the battery works well and does what it says on the tin. A typical customer review says;

Having plowed through lots of customer reviews, 88% percent say the battery is excellent. Some have gone back and bought more because they were so impressed. 

However, out of the other 18%, many complained about poor customer service, and the battery is faulty on delivery. These purchases were not through Renogy themselves but a well-known third party.

I firmly believe that some of the problems through the third party stem from its delivery. If customers had bought through Renogy, they wouldn’t have had the same issues. The stories about leaking batteries pay testament to this. 

My opinion is that buying directly from Renogy will provide you with a much better level of customer service. And any problems with a faulty product, for instance, will be sorted out very quickly.

After all, if you look at Renogys’ website reviews, you won’t find any battery complaints. Used in the right way, the AGM 100Ah will provide reliable off-grid power for years to come.

Rich Solar 100Ah AGM 12V Deep Cycle Battery

Well, I was hoping to provide information about the Rich Solar 100Ah 12V Deep Cycle battery. But unfortunately, it’s not to be as apart from Rich Solars information on their website. There isn’t much other information available about it.

But I did manage to find a promotional video produced by Rich Solar;

I can’t even compare it head-to-head as the specifications seem to be the same as the Renogy. See below:

I contacted Rich Solar and asked them if they had any further information about the battery. They did reply to me saying;

“This is a battery made from a manufacturer that makes many famous brands that are OEM standard. So this battery is built with high quality.”

But as I say, the battery has precisely the same specs as the Renogy. So there isn’t any point in rehashing those specifications here.

The pros are the same, the cons for weight are the same. The only difference is the list price which is $16.00 more.

If you feel you would like to buy the battery through Rich Solar, they have regular discounts. However, it is not available to purchase from that well known third party internet re-seller

Newpowa: Leoch 100Ah AGM 12V Deep Cycle Battery

Once again, I wanted to provide you with loads of information about the Newpowa 100 Ah AGM battery. But unfortunately, I am only able to provide you with its specifications. They are slightly different from Renogy and Rich Solar, so I can point out where they differ.

Who is Leoch?

Newpowa does not manufacture the battery that honor falls to a company called Leoch. When I asked Newpowa if they could provide further information about the 100Ah AGM. They said;

” We carry it in our line.” 

I did find out that Leoch is a Chinese company with a head office in Hong Kong. They manufacture Lead-Acid and Lithium storage products. Applications include cars, tricycles, E.Bikes, and Golf Carts.

The battery is called the LPL12 – 100, 100Ah 12V AGM. Newpowa says, “it is designed for solar energy storage applications.”

The Differences Between Newpowa, Renogy, and Rich Solar AGM’s
  • Internal Resistance – 4.9mΩ (Approx) v 5.0mΩ (Approx)
  • Maximum Discharge Current – 1200A (5 Seconds) v 1100A (5 Seconds)
  • Thermal Bolt Size – T11 v M8 x 1.25 x 20 mm
  • Weight – 69.5lbs/31.5Kg v 63.9 lb/29 kg. The Leoch is even heavier by another 7lbs. Does this suggest an even better build and higher quality components? It’s something to think about.
  • Warranty – 1-year material v 2-year material. This may prove crucial if the Leoch fails after 12 months.
  • Price – There is $50,00 for Rich Solar and $66.00 for Renogy. If your budget is tight, the Renogy will save you a few dollars.

The rest of the specifications are the same; even the dimensions are similar. I could now set out what Newpowa has on their website about the battery, But I feel doing that would detract from comparing the three AGM 100Ah’s. Because I would just be repeating myself.

What Is An AGM Battery?

It is a type of sealed lead-acid battery that is maintenance-free, unlike a flooded battery that needs topping up with water.

AGMs are manufactured in 2 variants meant for use in different applications.

  1. Vehicle starter batteries that have a high initial cold-cranking amp output to start it.
  2. Deep cycles are designed to provide a steady amp output for applications that require constant power. Perfect for use as boat and recreational vehicle house batteries and other DIY projects.

So you wouldn’t use an AGM car starter battery as a house battery or in a DIY project. And you wouldn’t use a deep cycle battery like a car starter battery. Having said that, some marine batteries will do both. 

AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat, and they come under the broader term known as VRLA. Although they are sealed and spillage-free, they do have a release valve as a safety feature.

This means they need to be kept in a ventilated area to allow any noxious gases to escape safely. But they don’t have to be installed on a level surface. Angles or on their side are okay but not upside down.

The batteries stand up well to low temperatures, practical if you live in a cooler climate. Because they have a low self-discharge, shelving isn’t a problem. Just check their charge now and again and top off if necessary. 

Disadvantages of AGM Batteries

It would be remiss of me not to mention their disadvantages because you need to know if you are new to solar. I have already mentioned the need for the battery to be kept in a ventilated space.

  • They have a low tolerance to overcharging, which will lead to premature battery death. This is why in my opinion, it is so important you use a solar charge controller.
  • 100Ah AGM batteries are heavy. Their average weight is around 65.87lbs/29.88Kg and is a lot to carry around in your RV or boat. If you had a battery bank of 4, the combined weight would be around 263lbs/119Kg.
  • Limited Depth Of Discharge (DOD). It is recommended that you should discharge an AGM battery by no more than 50%. There will be instances when you will take the DOD lower than that; it sometimes can’t be helped. But you don’t want to be doing this regularly because you will kill the battery.
  • Their capacity reduces over time. For instance, after the battery has completed its lifetime cycles, anything between 500 and 1000 plus. Its capacity will be reduced to 50% in the case of a 100Ah which equates to 50Ah. But it is not unusual to see a battery last 5 years or more if kept charged when not in use.

After my list of disadvantages, you might be thinking that an AGM battery might be more trouble than it’s worth. Honestly, this is not the case. All battery types Gel, Flooded, and Lithium, all have some disadvantages. 

My Closing Thoughts

I admit I couldn’t find out much about two of the batteries. But I think the specifications I presented are enough to compare them. Because at the end of the day, an AGM battery is an AGM battery.

Ultimately you will probably make a choice based on the reputation of the manufacturer. I’m left with no choice but to suggest the Renogy AGM 100Ah Deep Cycle Battery. Based on price and because it is a known quantity.
